QNAP has released the TVS-hx77AX series, a new family of desktop network-attached storage systems designed to handle demanding workloads including video collaboration, virtualization, and small-scale artificial intelligence projects. The lineup consists of three models: the 16-bay TVS-h1677AX, the 12-bay TVS-h1277AX, and the 8-bay TVS-h877AX, each built on the same core platform but with different storage configurations to suit varying capacity and performance needs.
What You Get: Core Specifications and Architecture
All three systems feature an AMD Ryzen 5 PRO 7645 processor, a six-core chip with twelve threads and boost speeds reaching 5.1GHz. Each unit ships with 16GB of DDR5 memory that can be expanded to 192GB across four user-accessible slots, with optional ECC error correction available for data reliability in professional environments. The systems run QNAP’s QuTS hero operating system, which is built on the ZFS file system known for its data integrity features and self-healing capabilities.
Networking includes dual 10GBASE-T ports for high-speed connectivity along with dual 2.5GbE ports, providing flexibility for various network environments. Three PCIe Gen 4 expansion slots allow you to add additional network adapters, discrete graphics processing units for compute workloads, or other expansion hardware. The key differentiator among the three models is how they balance traditional hard drive storage with faster NVMe technology. The TVS-h1677AX combines twelve 3.5-inch SATA bays with four 2.5-inch U.2 NVMe slots, giving you a total of sixteen drive bays. The TVS-h1277AX reduces the SATA count to eight bays while keeping the same four U.2 NVMe slots. The TVS-h877AX is the smallest, offering six SATA bays paired with two U.2 NVMe slots, but those two NVMe drives receive double the PCIe bandwidth with Gen 4 x4 lanes instead of x2.
This hybrid storage design works with QNAP’s Qtier tiering feature, which automatically moves frequently accessed data to the faster NVMe tier while pushing less-active files to the slower SATA drives. Keep in mind that Qtier requires QuTS hero version 6.0 and was still listed as a pending feature at launch, so you should verify availability before relying on automatic tiering.
Performance and Advanced Features
QNAP published lab performance figures for the fully populated TVS-h1677AX equipped with upgraded memory and multiple network adapters. The system achieved 12,174MB per second sequential read speeds and 11,065MB per second sequential write speeds over SMB protocol. Over iSCSI, it delivered over 1.1 million random read IOPS and 782,483 random write IOPS. However, these numbers represent a heavily upgraded configuration with 64GB of memory and additional network cards, not the standard 16GB configuration most buyers will receive.
One of the most significant additions to this series is NFS over RDMA support, which enables Remote Direct Memory Access for network file sharing. Unlike traditional NFS that routes all traffic through the CPU, RDMA allows direct memory-to-memory transfers between systems, reducing CPU overhead during data movement. This feature benefits users running high-performance storage workloads with multiple NVMe drives for video processing, machine learning model training, and virtualization. QNAP demonstrated that the system could sustain more than five simultaneous 4K ProRes video streams in their reference configuration. Enabling NFS over RDMA requires a compatible RoCE-capable network adapter, such as QNAP’s 25GbE SmartNIC.
